The process involved with registering an expiring domain can be a quite confusing task. You need to know when the domain reaches expiry, where you can register and the subsequent macro processes.

I have listed below the domain name life cycle. This mainly includes popular gTLD’s and not ccTLD’s. After you have understood the process, it should me much easier for you to predict and increase your chances of acquiring the expiring domain of your choice.

Domain Life Cycle:

Once a domain is registered, it goes into the 5 day Add-Grace Period. Within this period the domain can be unregistered and made available for re-registration to the general public. If the domain is not unregistered it will be unavailable for the registration during a time frame of 1 to 10 years as chosen by the registrant. During this time the domain owner has unrestricted use of the domain.

At the end of the registration period, the registrant needs to extend the registration period for possession of the same. On extending the registration period, i.e. renewing the domain, the domain continues in the above mentioned cycle. However, if the domain is not renewed, it falls into the next phase - Auto-Renew Grace period for a duration of 45 days. Keep in mind that a Registrar can determine how long this period lasts, but it cannot exceed 45 days. During the Auto Renew Grace period the registrant can pay a renewal fee and continue to use the domain name. As per the Registrar the website associated to the domain may or may not resolve.

If the Registrant still does not renew the domain, it then enters the Redemption Grace period, which lasts for 30 days. The Registrant can opt to redeem the domain by paying the Redemption Grace fee, which pushes the domain back to the beginning phase.

Now, if the domain is still not registered after the domain completes the 30 day redemption period, it then enters a 5 day Pending Delete period and the registrant cannot renew the domain name. Once the domain completes the Pending Delete period it is made available for registration to the general public,

Some Registrars auction off the domain to a domain auction site within 60 days of the expiration date. Not every Registrar does this, but do keep it in mind.

I am sure that once you are thorough with the domain life cycle, your chances of registering an expiring domain will significantly increased.

How do I Appraise my Domain Name?

The first step to appraising your Domain is asking the right question. How much a potential buyer would be willing to pay to acquire your domain name – is a good start. Interest in your domain name will definitely increase its intended value, specially if you consider auctioning it off.

How do you determine if your domain’s worth? Most individuals are quick to reply, “Simple, get it appraised.” However, what they need to understand is that there are no industry standards when it comes to domain appraisals.

A multitude of companies on the web offer to evaluate your domain with their opinion on your domain’s worth. Of course, their service cost do apply; anything between the range of $10 to $50, in addition to their online certificate. However an appraisal certificate may not necessarily do anything for your domain name. You also need to consider that a single domain name can have a range of differing values when evaluated by different appraisers.

We have repeatedly heard that a domain name is only worth what a buyer is willing to pay for it. It is evident that even if a domain name has been evaluated at $1,000 but takers will only shell out $600 then the real value of the domain is far less than the perceived value that it was originally appraised for.

If you have absolutely no idea what your domain name is worth, research on forums with active appraisal boards, professional domainers, individuals that have been in the business for a long time and online portals that have achieved a name for themselves in terms of domain appraisals. You will then be able to contemplate an asking price if there was indeed someone interested in the name.

Do play smart and put forth your query with caution considering the number of scams on the internet designed to play on your emotions and get your money. A common instance where a “buyer” shows some interest in your domain name and requests it to be appraised from a particular appraiser and insists that no other appraisers will do. After you pay for the appraisal services, the ‘buyer’ suddenly disappears. Countless fall for this cruel trick with the hope that finally there is someone interested in their domain. I suggest that you research the appraisers website through customer feedback and industry reviews. Keep in mind that genuine buyers are more interested in the domains intrinsic value.

Do make sure you are engaging with a reputable company if you do decide to apply for a professional appraisal.

One of the most common problem i come across every week on the domain forums is with regards to domain transfers.

This is with regards to the transfer of the domain from one registrar to another registrar

Most owner of domains wait till a few days before the expiry of the domain to place a request for the transfer of domain, since the think that placing the transfer earlier would result in the loss of the remaining time left for the expiry of domain.

Since the transfer of domains can take anywhere between 5-8 days to complete and if it expired during the process, the losing registrar would refuse the domain transfer. There is a rule that expired domains cannot be transferred.

Most of the time the owner of the domain name does not know about the process as many registrar fails to educate the owner since they think that its not in their business interest. Since a failed transfer means that the domain owner would have to compulsorily renew the domain with them for at least another year. As a domain reseller, i think this is a very bad approach on the part of domain registrar as it makes the customer disillusioned with the service and they would take their business to another registrar at the first given moment.

As a domain owner you need to understand the following:

When you transfer the domain name, one year gets added to the domain from the current expiry date. So you wont lose any time duration when you transfer the domain name.

For example if your domain still has 5 months for expiry and if transfer the domain to another registrar, then after the transfer you would have 17 months before the domain expires.

The lesson is…

If you are not satisfied with your registrar and wants to transfer to another registrar. Do it NOW and don’t wait for the last moment.

The only exception is if you have registered the domain recently or renewed your domain name, you would have to wait for 60 days before you can transfer to another registrar. This rule is placed by ICANN the governing body of the domain name, so as to safe guard the interest of the registrar. Since in the past, many fraudster charged back on their credit card and transfer the domain name to another registrar, which resulted in the registrar incurring the loss.

I have been doing business online for several years now. During this period i have joined several web hosting services and some of them were great and some providers were terrible. What was the difference?

Firstly, the kind of customer service made a big difference. If some web hosting providers does not list their telephone number on their site so, that you can contact them in case of problem 24 hours a day and seven days a week, then domain choose that company.

It is very important point for someone who is putting their first site. Since, they would have questions and its best in such cases to pick up the phone and talk to the hosting provider and get the issue solved. Its faster and much better to communicate directly by talking than communicating by way of e-mail and live chat.

The second important difference is the various choices available at the hosting provider. Does your hosting provider provide shared, dedicated, reseller accounts? Before choosing a web hosting provider you need to decide what kind of hosting you would need and if its available with the provider you are looking for.

If you are just planning to just put a couple of site and don’t expect millions of visits per day, then shared hosting is perfect for you but if you wish to start selling web space to other provider then you would be needing reseller hosting account.

But if you are expecting millions of visitors per day on your websites then you be needing virtual private server (VPS) or dedicated server. VPS and dedicated servers provides you with the resources which you would need to handle millions of visit a day and its much costly as compared with shared hosting or reseller hosting.

Thirdly, the different addons provided by the hosting providers is also a major factor. Do not sign up with hosting provider which does not provide you with a comprehensive control panel and access to your site statistics package, mysql support, word press etc and also provide with the option to upgrade your hosting package or upgrade the bandwidth.

You may not need this at the start or don’t understand what it is, but as you get experience you would surely make use of the additional addons which is provided by the hosting provider.

Below is a simple step to putting your websites online:

1. Register your domain with domain registrar like www.answerable.com or networksolutions.com.

2. Sign up with your domain provider for hosting also as it would be easier for you to manage.

3. Once you have signed for the above two, you would need to change the name server and point it to the hosting providers servers. Its very simple to do it and you can always call your domain registrar or the hosting provider and they would guide you with the process.

Don’t select a provider who are not up to the mark. You can check some best web hosting service at http://www.Answerable.com
